Does OLED sucks as much as MiniLED when using HDR is enabled with SDR contents?
New Nvidia drivers added the possibility to transform sdr videos in HDR, it’s a bit annoying enabling and disabling HDR every time.
Will they find a solution to this problem? π
Mod edit: new thread created
January 25, 2024 at 7:01 am #75564PCM2Well it doesn’t have a local dimming algorithm combined with the lack of HDR tone mapping precision to worry about. But you can expect locked off controls, ABL to be forced on and wonky colour accuracy and gamma. So switching between the two is something you’ve got to get used to I’m afraid, it’s not handled perfectly on any monitor. Perhaps you should consider using an application like ColorControl so you can switch HDR on and off with a keyboard shortcut?
January 25, 2024 at 8:59 am #75567WeissrolfOn Windows 11 the default keyboard shortcut for switching HDR on/off is WIN+ALT+B.
January 25, 2024 at 9:01 am #75569PCM2This requires you have “Game Bar” active, which some claim induces performance issues on some games or systems. On my system it introduced issues with micro stuttering when I last played around with it, so I don’t use it. I’m so used to activating and deactivating HDR ‘the long way’ that I really don’t care for shortcuts, though. I mean it takes 3 clicks of the mouse, so first world problem as far as I’m concerned. π
January 25, 2024 at 9:11 am #75570sblantipodiThanks for the answer, as always very informative.
I switch between SDR to HDR and viceversa using the Windows shortcut,
“Win + Alt + B”but my X32FP has other problems, for example when you enable HDR, adaptive dimming is not enabled by default, and when you return to SDR you need to manually disable adaptive dimming.
I have a color profile for SDR, so when I enable HDR, I need to disable the color profile and then reactivate it once in SDR.A real pain to enable/disable HDR in my case so most of the times I don’t enable HDR for videos and full stop.
Now that nvidia added this good features I would like to start using HDR for videos since I like the result but it’s too much inconvenient on my monitor,
this is the reason why I need an upgrade.I would like to have a smarter monitor that doesn’t need to enable/disable adaptive dimming and a smarter monitor that can be hardware calibrated in order to avoid the software loading of the color profile.
January 25, 2024 at 9:13 am #75573PCM2Do you not use Windows 11? Because that uses separate ICC profiles for SDR and HDR. If you have a profile activated under SDR it won’t be active when you switch to HDR and will reactivate when switching to SDR.
January 25, 2024 at 9:38 am #75574sblantipodiYes I use Win11 but I’m using DisplayCAL to calibrate the monitor that bundles a DisplayCalProfile Loader that is a separate software that loads the profile,
I need to try to disable the displaycal profile loader and see if windows can manage that thing well without that software (I suppose yes)… πSorry for the off topic.
PS: I disabled the displaycal profile loader, double checked that the profile is selected in the Windows “System -> Display” menu,
rebooted the system.
the profile is not automatically loaded. I always had problems with windows and color profile not loading from times to times, this is why, displaycal developers created the displaycal profile loader I suppose…January 25, 2024 at 9:55 am #75578sblantipodiooops. following this guide:
https://pcmonitors.info/articles/using-icc-profiles-in-windows/helped in making it work as expected, I was not ticking the βUse Windows display calibrationβ checkbox…
January 25, 2024 at 10:15 am #75580sblantipodiI’m sorry if I continue the offtopic, I can’t move all those posts but feel free to move them in another thread if needed π
I correct myself. Windows color profile loader does not work well here even if I followed your guide.
I can see it by naked eye but I have a tool that tell me if the profile is correctly loaded or not.At boot no profile is loaded:
no profileIf I open windows settings, the profile is immediately loaded:
https://i.postimg.cc/T3n34Nkc/windows-profile.pngbut it is less accurate than if using the displaycal profile loader:
https://i.postimg.cc/RFZCqSvP/displaycal.pngI would say that the windows profile loader is completely broken, this is why most of the calibration software bundles their own profile loader.
am I wrong?
is there a way to fix this?January 25, 2024 at 10:19 am #75582PCM2Sometimes there’s a slight delay in Windows loading the profile or you may need to open up a program. I haven’t had any issues myself using the method described in the article. I also like to use the ‘DisplayProfile’ utility mentioned in the article to double-check the profile is loaded. This will also correctly apply any profile selected. I personally spend most of the time without ICC profiles in use and load them for specific purposes as a reviewer, so I don’t really have an issue with how it works.
January 25, 2024 at 10:26 am #75590sblantipodiand I add that windows doesn’t correctly switches from SDR to HDR profile when toggling from SDR to HDR.
may I ask you why you don’t use a profile as default?
Wide gamut monitors looks pretty bad even when browsing the web without a profile, is there some other tricks than having an ICC profile?
thanks!!!January 25, 2024 at 10:35 am #75592PCM2Most of the time when I use a monitor I’m reviewing a monitor. I use its full capabilities, including full gamut, and assess that. I then assess sRGB emulation separately – and that’s also the answer to your second question there. sRGB is a very restrictive colour space which doesn’t appeal to everyone, but if it does there are certainly alternative ways to display content ‘appropriately’ within that space beyond profiling. And for applications which aren’t colour-aware or ICC aware. But that does rely on a good sRGB emulation on the monitor ideally or at least good EDID information to feed novideo_srgb for example. Profiles can assist in feeding that information, as covered in the article.
P.S. I was very polite in splitting this off into its own thread even though it technically contravenes the forum rules. I did make an exception because I value your contribution here but I don’t want anybody else to get ideas as to the sort of threads I usually accept here.
January 25, 2024 at 10:55 am #75593sblantipodiI understood, thanks for the kind answer, I appreciate it.
I’m sorry, I don’t want to break the rules, I will be more careful in the future. πJanuary 25, 2024 at 10:56 am #75595PCM2No worries. π
