Indeed – and the PD32M has a rather unresponsive and poorly tuned local dimming algorithm. ‘Blooming’ and trails of blooming are common complaints. People who have compared it with the PG32UQX (and Chris from Totallydubbed who’s reviewed the PD32M and XG320U) find the AUO panel solutions far superior in terms of HDR performance and local dimming to the AOC’s Innolux solution. The AOC does at least have significantly better pixel responsiveness going for it, but I think “beta level product” is a fair description.
September 11, 2022 at 2:47 pm #69378EsaTAt least it’s completely inexcusable that backlight PWM is still causing problems.
It should have been obvious years ago, that frequency has to be very high to avoid flicker.
Like 2.5 kHz in my soon nine years old Dell U3014.
I mean it shouldn’t be any “existence of universe” level mystery that LEDs “decay” magnitude faster than phosphor in CRT…Sure hope AUO’s “new” panel comes actually available soon and in actually decently working monitors.
At this pace I’ll have to keep 10 year celebration for U3014!September 19, 2022 at 5:07 pm #69429EsaTWell, looks like Coolermaster’s 27″ 4K monitor with AUO FALD backlight panel has been renamed to “Tempest GP27U” and is maybe coming in near future:
https://old.reddit.com/r/Monitors/comments/xfwmcs/seems_like_the_cooler_master_gp27fus_isnt_coming/ioxa4p4/Hopefully that AUO’s 27″ FALD panel turns out to be modern one for having at least some kind option in case supposedly new 32″ FALD panel is just same old slow LCD matrix from Asus PG32UQX & with gluing FALD backlight onto it having taken this long.
September 19, 2022 at 5:27 pm #69432PCM2Thanks for the update. Have now updated the news piece to reflect new designation as the Tempest GP27U. I’ve got my fingers crossed this turns out to be a decent effort with new-generation properly tweaked AUO panel as well.
September 24, 2022 at 7:50 pm #69482PCM2News piece on the ViewSonic XG341C-2K that was mentioned earlier in this thread is now available.
September 30, 2022 at 5:21 pm #69496October 3, 2022 at 4:45 pm #69515EsaTFALD control of CoolerMaster Tempest GP27U looks promising at least in static content basing on this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83UQJKmuFkA
(while Sony M9 is total garbage…)October 3, 2022 at 4:49 pm #69521PCM2Yes, that does indeed look promising. It appears to show much more dark-biasing whereas the M9 looks to happily bright-bias a lot. Coupled with the relatively limited number of dimming zones, it seems to flood dark shades a lot of the time, which isn’t great. The algorithm plus the clearly superior number of zones on the GP27U does indeed make a substantial positive difference.
October 3, 2022 at 9:18 pm #69522EsaTLet’s hope that besides this actually working FALD, it has also that “refresh rate independent” overdrive of GM27-FQS.
CoolerMaster really isn’t such company that they would be making actual LCD matrix controlling chips.
So what ever is behind that far superior to standard overdrive behaviour, likely comes from AUO with the panel of GM27-FQS.October 4, 2022 at 9:00 pm #69559EsaTWell, LG has announced intentions to start making 27″ and 32″ OLEDs.
Mehh part is that it seems to WRGB based and hence have average colour gamut to start with, which gets further limited by that white subpixel at higher brightness.
Neither there’s any info if refresh rate is going to be modern or retro 60Hz.https://www.avforums.com/news/lg-display-set-to-launch-its-own-27-and-32-inch-oled-panels-in-2023.20188/
https://www.oled-info.com/lg-display-start-producing-mid-size-woled-panels-demand-tvs-declinesOctober 4, 2022 at 9:00 pm #69565PCM2I’d like to think the targeting of “gaming monitors” implies 120Hz+, but they don’t seem to have officially confirmed the refresh rate and that is indeed open to interpretation. Furthermore, the original source article seems to have just added that terminology in themselves rather than it being officially used by LG Display. They also specifically use the phrase “gaming monitors” with reference to LG’s UltraFine OLED Pro models with JOLED panels – which is clearly not appropriate.
So *fingers crossed, but not holding my breath* 😀
October 6, 2022 at 3:31 pm #69579EsaTUhh, if this is correct JOLED could out of picture…
https://www.oled-info.com/printed-oled-producer-joled-brink-bankruptcyThat would be bummer because of them being the only OLED maker using standard subpixel layout and having the widest gamut.
And if question is truly about yields in making monitor size panels that casts also some shadow on how fast we can really expect 4K monitor panels from other OLED makers.I would much prefer putting mid fingers up toward those who’ve decided display tech development of the last dozen years…
October 6, 2022 at 3:33 pm #69581PCM2Yeah, that doesn’t look promising at all. 🙁
October 6, 2022 at 7:12 pm #69587EsaTWhen it rains it sure pours…
Spending on large area OLED manufacturing equipment has halved in couple years and apparently heading toward zero in next year.
Neither is Samsung expected to increase QD-OLED production capacity until couple years from now.
https://www.thelec.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=4212Definitely bad news for getting self emissive pixel tech monitors.
Unless TV market has reached some kind saturation with sales falling and there’s hence going to be more free production capacity. Not that micro LED news are any more promising with only one panel size going into production and others having uncertain timeline:
https://www.thelec.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=4224Guess monsoon is starting with this amount of downpour.
October 11, 2022 at 4:19 pm #69634EsaTFound some still no news for actual release date updates for Cooler Masters.
GP27Q was apparently changed from AUO panel to Innolux panel, but main specs are supposed to be same.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Monitors/comments/xq8bar/comment/iqc5bki/
Suspect gamut took hit, unless Innolux has improved on that…Local dimming of both it and GP27U can be used also for SDR:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Monitors/comments/xq8bar/comment/iqg7pbp/
Here’s test of it in GP27U:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oa7TnBqHCQQNow why they can’t use also A-TW polarizer and we would have real nice IPS panel also for lower room illumination…
(throw in upgraded 2000:1 contrast and VAs wouldn’t have really anything to go for them)October 11, 2022 at 4:23 pm #69637PCM2Yeah, would’ve been really nice to see enhanced static contrast and A-TW. Good that local dimming isn’t locked to HDR only, that would’ve been a real shame. 🙂
October 11, 2022 at 9:29 pm #69640EsaTAcer X32 FP again seems to be in some limbo without slightest new information.
Looks lot like my Dell will be celebrating 9th birthday.
Even if release happens soon, Europe is probably treated as some third world country with availability lagging US by at least month.Though would be certainly nice to know, if there are any response time/FALD performance related differences between it and what should be same tech 27″ panel in GP27U.
October 18, 2022 at 3:31 pm #69683EsaTLooks like there should be light (other than incoming train) in the end of tunnel at least as far as Tempest GP27U is concerned:
https://www.reddit.com/user/CM-RyanAgain for Acer X32 FP there just doesn’t seem to be anything happening.
October 18, 2022 at 3:32 pm #69686PCM2Indeed – good to see! 🙂
October 19, 2022 at 3:55 pm #69697EsaTI think ViewSonic VX2781-4K-PRO might be using a BOE panel.
There doesn’t seem to be any 1152 zone panels from AUO and also higher DCI-P3 and lower AdobeRGB gamut doesn’t point toward AUO.
