Glad to hear this. I’m almost certain to replace the X32FP with one of these OLED’s here soon.
Thanks
February 16, 2024 at 8:06 pm #75681sblantipodiI started many many years ago by calibrating my monitors to 120cd/m2,
some years after I felt that 160 cd/m2 is much better, for my current tastes 160cd/m2 is the lowest brightness usable in a normal lit environment (not well lit).my working/gaming setup is now calibrated at 250cd/m2 when in SDR and 250cd/m2 is much much better in a normal lit environment (lights should not point to the monitor).
at night, with no lights in the room, a fully white window may be somewhat “too much” but I compensate it with a bias light behind the monitor,
all in all, even at night, I like the added brightness and color vibrancy that comes from a brighter screen.this is just my two cents relative to my personal tastes, nothing that is true for everyone.
February 22, 2024 at 7:26 am #75691losttarnWhat is the outlook of good Mini LED/OLED displays with purposeful HDR, in 250-400$, coming out throughout (or by end) of the year? I am eyeing the AOC Q27G3XMN but it’s price is higher in EU than the 280$ in US, and the bloom effect is a compromise.
February 22, 2024 at 7:29 am #75694PCM2Based on known panels under development the chance of an OLED in that price range by the end of the year is close to 0. I’m not aware of any Mini LED alternatives that would directly compete with the AOC Q27G3XMN, which doesn’t mean there won’t be any but they’re not on my radar. It does surprisingly well given the number of dimming zones and in most scenes the ‘bloom effect’ is well handled – this will be explored in detail in our upcoming review.
February 22, 2024 at 4:52 pm #75696losttarnI’ve been looking forward to the review. Hardware Unboxed was pleased by the performance, so it will be nice to see what you think. I would like to get one at the MSRP but EU pricing is weird sometimes, for better or worse. I am so excited to experience a decent HDR implementation and better blacks. Long ago you recommended CF591 (VA) and I really liked that, I sold it when setup changed, and recently I sold LG GP850-B. GP850 was decent but I found it looked washed out, especially in regards to darker colors. I thought I wanted OLED level of color accuracy but now I am more eager to get a Miniled with proper HDR implementation, evade the pricy OLEDs and burn in issue. Perhaps more manufacturers will leverage HDR with VA panels like AOC has seemingly done with Q27G3XMN?
February 22, 2024 at 4:53 pm #75698PCM2Yeah, I’d love to see more models like the AOC! And that C27F591FD, what a blast from the past. I remember reviewing that one, can’t believe it was nearly 8 years ago. π
February 22, 2024 at 6:22 pm #75699spirohThe Alienware 32 inch oled arrived yesterday to replace the Acer X32FP. Yeah, I will not be going back to any LCD panel going forward. I always had FALD turned off because it never worked right IMO on the X32FP. The brightness level is more than enough on this oled and the picture quality and colors are noticeably better. Now the only issue I have is do I stick with this or get the asus which has the built in KVM and flat screen? But my time with LCD is done.
February 22, 2024 at 6:25 pm #75702PCM2I’m glad you’re enjoying your ~8.3 million dimming zones. π
The curve will probably take a bit of time to get used to, in my experience several days at least. You might actually start quite liking it, the curve isn’t particularly steep in this case and at least when gaming and watching movies it should just draw you in a bit. Preference for this or flat is very subjective, of course, and I can definitely appreciate some will prefer a flat screen. π
February 22, 2024 at 9:10 pm #75705spirohYes, I do agree the curve on this monitor isn’t as bad as an old Samsung one I’ve had years ago. FYI, the text fringing is not an issue for me on this monitor. It was on the 42″ C2 and Alienware last gen ultrawide I’ve seen in person.
February 23, 2024 at 2:39 pm #75708RakniHi spiroh,
Iβm trying to decide if I want to test the aw3225qf. Currently I have the x32fp. What do you mean by FALD never worked on the x32fp? On low settings, I think it does a pretty good job. Could you describe your impressions of HDR gaming on the aw model compared to the Acer?
Thanks for your time π
February 23, 2024 at 4:21 pm #75713spirohI think in general FALD has its limitations. It seemed very good for gaming but looked terrible when using the desktop. It seemed super faint, made the mouse pointer dull and you can literally see the FALD boxes moving with the mouse. In fact, the final decision to scrap it was when I connected my ipad pro to it and the monitor in default HDR settings looked so bad. The HDR gaming is amazing on this Alienware monitor. My biggest concerns going this route was the brightness levels but I actually have to turn down the settings to get it to where I want. The OLED’s are a step up in every way TBH.
February 25, 2024 at 7:44 am #75717sblantipodiI am waiting the new MSI to be available just to compare it to my X32FP.
Asus is banned in my house so I need to wait for the MSI.I doubt that I will not refund the monitor because I use it for desktop usage (10 hours a day) and burn in is a big concern but I just want to see how better it is compared to MiniLED while gaming.
February 25, 2024 at 7:45 am #75718RakniThanks for the info. Canβt wait for pcm2s review of the new qd oled panels π¬
February 25, 2024 at 10:34 am #75728PCM2Our review [video] of the Q27G3XMN has now been published.
February 25, 2024 at 9:17 pm #75743losttarnI looked quite a bit at it, I will wait with purchasing a new monitor, it’s too expensive in EU, and if I am going to extend my budget it should be for a monitor that is good in many more aspects (aesthetics also). I am not a fan of the gamer look. Remember the IPS HP 27er? I have a humble request..is it possible for you to release a video looking at HDR on Linux vs on Windows? Currently HDR is best supported on Linux via Valve’s SteamOS (Gamescope), which was made in order for Steam Deck, while standard Linux (KDE Kwin/Plasma) is a work in progress. Alternatively I would love to hear your thoughts on this video; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqHo-NhOPXw. Does HDR look good or on par with Windows? Regardless I am appreciative of your work, thanks!
February 25, 2024 at 9:19 pm #75748PCM2I have no experience with Linux and donβt use it, so no I wonβt be releasing any videos on that topic. I have no strong opinion of it, either, itβs really not my area (same with MacOS).
February 26, 2024 at 6:33 am #75751losttarnI was just curious if HDR in video looked normal, to extent it was possible (is it even?), but I’ll find out for myself in near future π
February 26, 2024 at 6:33 am #75753PCM2You can’t tell that from a video.
February 26, 2024 at 8:10 am #75754sblantipodiI don’t play video games in Linux because I prefer Windows for that but I often use Gnome (x11/Wayland) on my X32FP.
There is no HDR option yet on KDE and Gnome so there is no much to compare.
February 26, 2024 at 4:20 pm #75756losttarnYou can get experimental HDR support via Gamescope. I came across Digital Foundry’s video of Steam Deck OLED and it was mentioned that HDR looks in order.
