MikoolI just received a new unit of the Gigabyte MO32U24, as my first unit had a dead pixel. However before sending the old one back, I noticed a big difference on each of the respective factory calibration reports – on the gamma test, the old one reaches 250 nits, whereas this new one barely reaches 200. So how representative is this actually of the monitor’s real use brightness level? More than 50 seems like a pretty big difference, I would be bummed if this new unit is that much dimmer.

It’s not something to worry about. It could be that the gamma calibration is different, which is affecting how a grey level of ‘250’ is reported. This doesn’t reflect brightness capability of pure white as that is ‘255’. It could be that a different brightness setting was used on the monitor as well, which can affect how very bright shades are represented or recorded. The actual peak luminance should be ~300 nits (or up to ~500 nits with ‘APL Stabilize’ set to ‘High’) on all units for the sRGB mode, which is the setting shown in the calibration report.

MikoolWell that calms my nerves a bit. I’m still curious though – is it a significant difference? Is one better than the other? I looked up other people’s reports around the web and noticed that all of them have the same endpoint at 250 nits as yours does, so I can’t help but feel mine is an outlier (negatively or otherwise). I apologize if I am asking stupid questions, I am quite new to monitor tech.

PCM2In my experience with shades as bright as a grey level of ‘250’, you’re unlikely to notice much difference between the reported values there. The effect would be marginal if you’re manipulating images and should be entirely negligible for normal use of the monitor. Also, OLEDs have a bit of gamma sensitivity with brightness and temperature for that kind of shade, so what’s measured there could be completely different if taken with the monitor warmed up compared to not or with a different brightness setting. So it’s not worth worrying about at all.
