Hello! After 15 years of good service, my 1050p LG W2286L is starting to fail (it’s struggling to power on in the morning). So I’m looking for a replacement.

Initially I looked for a 1080p monitor, but there are very few which have a good review and are still available in the UK. However some comments on the RX 7600 I came across suggest it can run 1440p monitors, if you drop game quality settings and use FSR.

Do you think looking at 1440p monitors would be a good option, or would I be better staying with 1080p? And could you suggest a monitor, of whichever class?

My price point would be up to £250 – my old LG cost me £220 in 2010! I used the old monitor price as a guide to set budget, before I started looking at monitors and realised just how much they have dropped in price.

Use is purely for gaming, no photo editing or video work. It would be really nice if the monitor could show dark scenes clearly – the LG just can’t handle dark scenes. And SO many games seem to love using dark areas at some point. Looking at you, Warframe.

Games I play are single player (Terra Invicta, Subnautica, Empyrion) or PvE (Warframe, First Descendant). First Descendant is probably the most demanding.

Refresh rates, graphical quality – these were unknown things to me until I got the RX 7600, last year. First Descendant is the first game I have ever played with Ultra settings! The fluidity of 60HZ is amazing, but I am used to a lot less quality. Would love to keep 60Hz+ though.

      Thank you for your time!

        Hi Alex709 and welcome,

Given the games you play I think you’ll get more enjoyment out of a 1440p monitor than chasing higher frame rates on a 1080p display. The Radeon RX 7600 will cope fine for casual 1440p gaming and if you lower the settings a bit you’ll be able to drive up the frame rate somewhat. FSR does indeed help a lot, too. The visual quality difference of 1440p is well worth the investment in my view and is a lot more enjoyable than 1080p, even if you max out the graphical settings on your game for the 1080p display.

The main option to consider and a model I recommend for the sorts of games you play and with your budget in mind would be the AOC Q27G3XMN. It offers an excellent contrast experience for an LCD and will be significantly stronger than your LG in that respect. It also offers an enjoyable HDR experience at the same time and can run at significantly higher refresh rates than your LG for those times your GPU is able to stretch its legs a bit more.
