Our review of the ASUS ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDMGR (XG27AQDMG Gen2) is now live. This is a ‘TrueBlack Glossy’ MLA+ WOLED, with a screen surface that’s more reflective than QD-OLED offerings but doesn’t ‘lighten up’ in brighter lighting. This gives a more traditional glossy look which some prefer. The monitor also outperformed QD-OLEDs when it came to sustained HDR brightness performance, free from the same ‘medium shade dimming’ common to QD-OLEDs in high brightness HDR modes and capable of higher peak brightness at higher APLs (Average Picture Levels). There were slight undersaturation issues under HDR, but these could be counteracted (if you don’t mind a bit of oversaturation) in the OSD. Fringing issues during productivity tasks could be an issue for some, though they’re reduced compared to the original WOLED subpixel layout.

SDR performance was strong overall; excellent colour consistency, a generous but not extreme gamut and highly flexible sRGB and DCI-P3 emulation modes. The ‘sRGB Cal Mode’ (restricted sRGB emulation mode) on our unit had rather wonky gamma handling, but the more flexible sRGB gamut setting was better in that regard. There were some DSE (Dirty Screen Effect) issues observed for some darker shades, although these were far from extreme and typical to see to some degree on WOLED technologies – perhaps more so for Tandem WOLED in this segment. It can vary between units and we’ve also seen reports it improves over time. The monitor provided a solid 240Hz performance with very low input lag and exceptional pixel responses – we didn’t find the ‘OLED Anti-Flicker’ settings useful due to the dead zones they create, but some people might – they’re quite situational. Other features of note include a solid overall feel with good ergonomic flexibility, a compact coated metal stand base and HDMI 2.1 support. Overall this is a nice addition to the market for those who prefer a WOLED experience, with traditional glossy ‘feel’.
