PCM2Our review of the AOC AGON Pro AG276UZD is now live. This is a glossy QD-OLED monitor with 26.5″ 3840 x 2160 (‘4K’ UHD) screen and 240Hz refresh rate. It’s aggressively priced given the inclusion of DP 2.1 (UHBR20), with HDMI 2.1 and support USB-C (65W, with KVM). They also threw in some basic speakers for good measure. The monitor offered excellent detail and clarity, with minimal fringing issues and strong responsiveness. It provided quite a well calibrated SDR experience, including a fairly well-tuned but not fully flexible sRGB emulation setting. HDR was a bit shy about brightening up compared to some QD-OLEDs regardless of preset used and the monitor had an issue with underuse of the gamut under HDR. The former I’d put in the ‘not too bad’ category and the latter is something many would be fine with after tweaking saturation with the ‘Windows HDR Calibration’ tool. This issue has been present on all 3 AGON Pro QD-OLEDs I’ve reviewed so far. There were HDR modes that would give an uplift to darker area (useful in a moderately bright to bright room) and avoid dimming medium shades in high APL scenes where bright shades were more dominant.
If you consider what I’ve said previously about DP 2.1 and why I feel it’s something most people could do without and notice no difference forgoing on the monitor, you could consider the ASUS ROG Strix XG27UCDMG.
– The ASUS shares the panel with the AOC but lacks DP 2.1 support.
– Based on my testing the ASUS offers superior HDR colour calibration (using its gamut more appropriately) and is less shy about brightening up for small bright elements under HDR.
– The ASUS has unlocked colour space emulation settings (with adjustable colour channels), an OLED Anti-Flicker feature some will find useful and a proximity sensor.
– If you consider DP 2.1 functionality a ‘must have’ and you’re happy with the performance and quirks covered in the review, the AOC is an excellent choice. It’s priced very competitively, with an MSRP of just over £700. I’m unsure about price and availability in the US at time of review.
– The XG27UCDMG comes in closer to £850 (~$1000 USD).
