Hi everyone, I’ve read so many posts but I’m really still confused with the choice of the new monitor.
I currently use a Dell u2715h with satisfaction, but would like something bigger and with more than 60hz….

I’d like a 32″ or more, to use for video and photoediting and playing games. I’d like a little more vivid and contrasty colors than my current one, and I’m very tempted by the alienware DWF OLED… but I’m afraid of burn in, usually I keep the monitor for many years.

Is it still too early for OLED? it’s better wait?
Should I stay on an excellent ultrawide IPS?
      Thank you all!

        Hi Ginestro,

I happily recommend the Dell Alienware AW3423DW and related QD-OLED ultrawides more broadly, particularly for gaming but still with other uses ‘on the side’ (more on this shortly). Refer to this thread for some comparisons, but really if you’re happy with the price and feature set I think you’ll really enjoy the image performance any of these has to offer. It will be a massive upgrade over your current standard gamut IPS model and will certainly provide the “vivid and contrasty” colours you’re after. They aren’t perfect and you need to be aware of some of the issues raised in the review such as fringing issues, brightening up of the screen surface in brighter conditions which affects darker shade depth. And yes, that potential for burn-in.

As for burn-in specifically, it’s not something I’d worry about too much. Obviously it’s difficult to predict how things will play out with QD-OLED technology being used ‘normally’ for several years. But what I’d say to this is that Dell provides 3 years of burn-in cover which should provide at least some peace of mind. Furthermore, this update has just been added to our review of the AW3423DW but should be considered in the context of the QD-OLED more ultrawides more broadly:

“We’ve been using this monitor quite extensively now as our main monitor for a mixture of entertainment (gaming and video watching) plus a good amount of productivity. It has been used since the review in this fashion for over a year, when not reviewing other screens and at times alongside them. We haven’t experienced any burn-in issues of note and any mild image retention we experience from time to time clears up after the usual scheduled ‘Pixel Refresh’ cycle is run. We continue to monitor this.”

So I personally really enjoy the QD-OLED ultrawide experience and it’s something I enjoy for myself and try to encourage others to try. But if you’re still not sure and you’re really more comfortable with a monitor that will be more characteristically similar to what you currently have (and said you’re satisfied with), the 34″ Nano IPS ultrawides are still good options. We recommend the LG 34GN850-B for its solid price to performance ratio, but other models can be equally attractive depending on regional pricing and availability. They have a significantly wider gamut than your current U2715H, so they’ll still give you an edge in vibrancy compared to what you’re used to.

Thank you, so much information! This forum is really full of technical data and excellent advice. I really think I’ll get the oled, after so many years I would really like a new “really big” monitor.
If instead I want to stay on the IPS (cheaper), are there differences between the LG 34GN850 and the LG 34GN850-B?
Alternatively are there similar Dell monitors?

As noted in our news piece, the -“B” just means it has a mainly black back. It’s just something LG adds to their complete model designations – but sometimes it’s easier just to remove this and reviewers, retailers and users may do this. Some of their models instead include “-W” at the end for their full designation, if they have a mainly white back. The Dell alternative would be the discontinued Alienware AW3420DW.
