I am interested in the Samsung Odyssey G7 WQHD 27″ (LC27G73TQSPXEN) with VA panel. Is it still a good option today? Is it used mainly for gaming, adventure games and horror where deep blacks are essential.
Any better option for a similar price? (I would consider monitors up to 800, I find the Samsung now in half.)
      Thank you very much.

        Hi Sebarpe,

The information in this thread remains relevant today. The Odyssey G7 is still a unique option as it offers much better pixel responsiveness than the vast majority of other VA options. It has its quirks as explored in that thread and you have to weigh up how much they might annoy you vs. the unique performance and experience the monitor can provide. With your budget in mind, the current price you can get the monitor at and your usage I certainly feel it’s worth a try.

          Hi PCM2,

I’m following the thread you told me. Thank you.

Was about to open a similar thread.
Next days i could have the chance of “testing” an exposed G7 32 in a little store, for a while before buy (not sure to buy, just will give a try). I hope the time will be enough to evaluate any issues with the panel. Make a return could be way harder than the well known amazon thing.
I’m considering the G7 32 because of better text clarity/bigger display, as my eyes are thoose of a 47yo gaming dude πŸ™‚
27 will be fine too, but at this stage why not 32? Furthermore the curve make the display looks a bit smaller

Well, in my case it’s 56yo and the 32-inch option could be interesting.
Currently I use a Samsung C27F591, a 1080p that I was very happy with until I got the new glasses… now I see the pixels ;-)))

                πŸ˜€ Hi Sebarpe,
as I said here, I’m still deciding the way ahead. I’m thinking that 32” 1440p, at 80cm or so, might look like 1080p when seen closer, this only in terms of pixel density, but visual comfort would obviously be better.
I also thought that probably Odyssey 27 might be suitable within a shorter viewing distance, also using the scaling 110-120, etc. in the browser (what matters most to me if I have to read)
but at 27” a flat would be better.
I’ve been thinking about it for about a month, I’m very hesitant, especially due to the curve and the flickering and stuttering problems that many talk about in relation to the Odyssey. However I feel I need a bigger, more easy on the eyes display for both work and play than my current PG248Q.
Of course in the end i’ll make a shot in the dark πŸ˜€

given the G7 problems with gsync (even activating the “vrr” function introduced with the latest fw), has anyone experienced what happens when gsync is deactivated, in AAA titles in the 60-90 fps range and similar?
There should be some tearing with in game vsync off (despite being below 240), or anyway stuttering with in game vsync on, being a long way from 240fps.
And what if the vsync is globally enabled in nvidia control panel?
And setting the display refresh to 120/144?
Surely 240hz (compared to the “old” 60hz) in itself should minimize stuttering/tearing even when the gpu produces fps much lower than 240, but I don’t quite understand how this particular monitor behaves in such situations.
If we could do without the variable refresh rate (maybe just for games that show flickering problem the most) it could be a workaround for the flickering that afflicts these monitors, even if we have to give up an important feature

Not everyone is sensitive enough to tearing or stuttering to find the experience β€˜bad’ in the scenario you provided with VRR deactivated. You’re correct that a static 240Hz refresh rate makes issues with tearing and stuttering less noticeable compared to a static 60Hz and that alone will be a fine experience for some.

Looking at the specs of the G7 I see that it has a lower contrast than other monitors with a VA panel, how does this affect the blacks? Are they still deep enough? It’s my favorite thing about VA panels and the reason why I rule out IPS panels, I don’t like the glossy blacks of these panels.

                      Thanks.

That’s covered in this thread. Again, it’s still firmly within ‘VA only’ territory for normal static contrast even if it’s weaker than some VA models.

Hi PCM2, I’m definitely going to buy the G7, but instead of the 27″ that I thought at first I’m going for the 32″ model. I will comment my impressions as soon as I have tried it.
                          Thank you.

I’ve got a CHG70 which is getting quite long in the tooth (has the dreaded “scan lines on wake” issue that’s present in most reviews, recently started turning off and refusing to turn back on until I re-plug the power cord into the outlet) and am therefore reluctantly turning towards the monitor market once more.

I purchased this screen in 2018 but it seems we’ve not hit the OLED renaissance quite as quickly as I had imagined. Many screens still fail to crest even DisplayHDR 600. I really do like this screen despite its limiations, so I’m mainly looking for the same thing, but better.

Odyssey G7 is the first screen that springs to mind, since it seems like the next logical step from the CHG70. Although my experience with QC for my current screen makes this a rather questionable decision, and it seems to have missed grabbing your Recommended rating, it appears to have many of the VA benefits I like with less of the drawbacks from older models. And it’s only $500 right now so some issues can be more easily forgiven. I’m not sure if the response time is noticeably faster than the CHG70? I notice the contrast ratio is less and it still has the same number of dimming zones for HDR which is disappointing. Also concerned about VRR flickering. I do have a NVIDIA card now so I’m not sure how harshly one feels the lack of a proper G-Sync module, although most monitors coming out seem to be going the G-Sync Compatible route regardless. Looking specifically at the 1440p 27″ (too small for the 1000R curve?) model because it seems a smart bargain to ride out for another few years, when perhaps there will be more options for real (reasonably priced) OLED screens. I did consider the 4K Neo G7 but $1000 is pretty steep, might as well buy the AW3423DW at that point.

TL;dr is the Odyssey a substantial leap from my CHG70 or more of a sidegrade?

As an aside, that Ultrawide Alienware screen looks absolutely incredible. I feel like the price is reasonable too (if a bit rich for my blood) but honestly would prefer a full 4K screen as opposed to the ultrawide setup for compatibility reasons. Looking forward to seeing more screens in that neighborhood.

I’d say it makes sense as an upgrade. I do feel it will feel quite familiar and could be considered a ‘sidegrade’ in many respects for you, but that might not be a bad thing given how much you enjoyed the CHG70 but need to replace it with something. The 1000R curve on a 27″ screen isn’t for everyone (my personal experiences) but you may get used to it in time or you might actually enjoy it, particularly for casual gaming where I feel it adds to immersion without being bothersome. The responsiveness is certainly superior, hopefully this is something you’ll notice and enjoy but since you didn’t find the CHG70 bad in that respect let’s just consider that a possible bonus. It’s worth trying out the Odyssey G7, hopefully it will tide you over until more of an upgrade is available for you – perhaps a ‘4K’ UHD QD-OLED or similar. πŸ™‚
