      Hello,

I’m looking for recommendations on gaming monitors greater than 38 inches. I’ve been looking at the LG 38GL950G-B, but haven’t come across others that are similar. Any recommendations?

Also, something with a small bezel like the Dell U2419H, but not the U2422H.

      Any feedback is appreciated!

        Hi Dnske,

Do you actually mean “greater than 38” or really “around 38 inches”? The only monitors larger than 38″ (which actually have a 37.5″ screen) in all dimensions without getting into ridiculous sizes are ~42″ 16:9 models. And the ASUS PG42UQ would be a great example of such a screen. The 3840 x 1600 38″ ultrawides share the same panel as the LG 38GL950G and the LG’s a good option really. Alternatives would include the Dell AW3821DW and Acer X38 S, but I don’t feel they offer anything compelling over the LG really and the LG is a well-balanced product with appropriate pricing in the segment.

I’m not sure on your requirements for your peripheral monitor and why you didn’t like the U2422H specifically. But there are a plethora of basic ~24″ models with slender bezel designs and they’re difficult to separate based on performance. They aren’t something I really cover or have recent experience, partly because they’re not of interest to me personally and I prefer spending time reviewing screens I’ll enjoy using. There are some examples in this thread. You’ll find many models offer dual-stage bezels at the top and sides, with a slim panel border flush with the rest of the screen plus thin hard plastic outer part. Like the U2419H. But only a small number include this sort of arrangement at the bottom (misleadingly marketed as a ‘4-side borderless design’).

Sorry, I meant greater than 38 inches or 38 inches. I have been recommended a 48 inch, I believe it’s from Samsung. The only gripe I have is that it’s not 4K, the resolution on the 38GL950G-B is, as you know, 3840 x 1600 @ 2K. The other option was to go with a non-Ultrawide monitor at this size, but aesthetically it’s too much like a TV and doesn’t look like something that would be for a desk.

I saw a video of someone using a 48 inch Ultrawide as a gaming monitor, it didn’t look bad, but I feel going to such sizes impacts performance.

The only thing I dislike about the U2422H, is the price. Compared to the U2419H, it’s significantly more expensive and has barely any new changes, none I think.

I looked at that thread, and I didn’t like many of the monitors, from an aesthetic to performance standpoint. It seems like the U2422H is alone in that category.

It’s best to avoid using the term ‘K’ to describe monitor resolutions. It ends up giving you extremely misleading comparisons with ‘4K’ UHD (3840 x 2160) and it gets particularly messy mathematically when talking about ultrawide resolutions! 3840 x 1600 offers you the same horizontal pixel count (which is actually where ‘4K’ gets its name), but does indeed have significantly fewer vertical pixels. Ultrawide resolutions are their own own things really and the ~38″ models offer a great deal of ‘desktop real estate’ and immersion (section from EW3880R review). 49″ ultrawide screens are like having 2 x 27″ WQHD screens side by side, with a 32:9 aspect ratio and typically 5120 x 1440 resolution. The Samsung C49G95T is one such model. You don’t get quite as much vertical space or pixels as the ~38″ ultrawides but you gain a lot of space and pixels horizontally. Below is a useful graphic (courtesy of DisplayWars) illustrating the size differences between these two. The pixel density is similar in both cases. The gaming-oriented 49″ ‘super’ ultrawide models are also less attractive in my view given their use of VA panels – and the colour and gamma consistency weaknesses are particularly obvious on such a wide screen.

            ultrawide size comparison

I agree with you about the excessive price of the U2422H – the main change from the U2419H is that it has the dual-stage bezels on all sides as I described. This could be potentially useful to give you less of a border between screens in a portrait multi-screen setup, but aside from that it’s really just an aesthetic thing. It also includes ‘ComfortView Plus’, which means the backlight has its peak of blue light shifted to less energetic wavelengths. Potentially enhancing viewing comfort. Another alternative is the Dell P2422H – I’ve found its predecessors perform well and this one also includes ‘ComfortView Plus’. Whilst the bottom bezel is chunky, the top and side bezels have the slim dual-stage design. If you want a slight boost to 75Hz, the Samsung F24T45 we feature as a productivity recommendation is worth considering as an alternative.

Hey PCM2, is there anything new or maybe upcoming in the 38 and up ultrawide section ? Something with 144hz+ refresh rate. Feels like there is not a lot of options in this regard. I feel like 38 would be a great replacement for one 27” 1440p+ one 24” full hd screen. Gets rid of a lot of clutter, bazels, simplyfies the setup. Great both for gaming and productivity.

There aren’t any upcoming models I’m aware of, so just the older generation models referred to in my initial post. Only LG Display produces such panels and for large ultrawides they’ve shifted their attention to larger and lower pixel density OLED panels for now (such as that used in the 45GR95QE).
