Hello. Will I help myself if I exchange my TN for the mentioned IPS in terms of contrast (dark scenes)? Unfortunately, there is no review of my panel anywhere and I cannot compare it myself. I would like to enjoy more stealth games (Metro- all parts, Tomb Raider, Assassin’s Creed, Far cry, Skyrim, Snowrunner). I don’t want a VA panel because I’m worried about ghosts. Thank you.

        Hi zatarcz,

The AOC G2590VXQ is the 75Hz version (with simpler stand) of the G2590PX we’ve reviewed. It offers very similar contrast and colour reproduction characteristics. The AOC 24G2(U), 24G2SP(U) and 24G2SPAE’s Panda IPS-type panel offers significantly stronger static contrast – you can expect it to be ~400:1 higher (~1300:1 – 1400:1 vs. ~900:1 – 1000:1) following OSD tweaking. That alone is nice and does have a positive impact on the contrast experience, but it doesn’t tell you the full story. I’m sure you’re aware of ‘IPS glow’ which will affect those IPS models but not your old TN model. It’s also explored in the reviews. As explored there and in our panel types article, TN panels have their own issues which IPS models don’t because of their vertical gamma shifts. This means shades that are any brighter than black are brightened up (extra unintended dark detail revealed) lower down the screen, whereas higher up the screen things are more blended than they should be (too much masking of detail). The much higher gamma consistency of the IPS options, which don’t have this issue, is something people will often enjoy.

I’d also add that if you have a bit of light in your room or behind the monitor, it will draw your eyes away from weaknesses such as ‘IPS glow’ and generally improve perceived contrast. The TN inconsistencies I mentioned can be observed regardless of lighting environment, so you can’t overcome them in the same way. 🙂

          Thank you.
I have a warm white LED strip behind the monitor. This could help with IPS glow.

Is there any major difference between 24G2U/BK and 24G2SPU/BK for me? The 24G2SPU has a higher frequency and a higher brightness (I use 0 brightness in the evening or 50% during the day). Does it also have worse contrast? Here in the Czech Republic, as a novelty, the 24G2SPU is now $40 more expensive than the 24G2U ($160). Does it make sense to pay extra for some reason?

Yes, that will help a bit with perceived contrast and reduce the perceived intensity of any ‘IPS glow’. Still expect to see some, but it will be improved compared to sitting in a completely dark room.

The comparison between those two is drawn in the 24G2SP(U) review. The contrast is not weaker on the older model, provided you get one with a Panda panel – which you will unless you happen to receive a unit from a short period of time in early 2021 (relevant post). They originally used a Panda panel (as we reviewed), switched briefly to a BOE panel then back to Panda. The main difference with the new model, aside from refresh rate, is that the colour consistency is a bit better. It uses a newer variant of the panel which doesn’t lose quite as much saturation towards the peripheral regions of the screen. The pixel responsiveness is slightly better tuned for higher refresh rates but not as well-tuned for lower refresh rates. These aren’t massive differences by any means and given they’re both budget monitors (or supposed to be) I think you should probably have a go with the 24G2U rather than spending an extra $40 on something you might not find noticeably better.

So it can be said that if I get this monitor AOC 24G2U I will improve in every way and not lose any pixel response? My PC with Ryzen 5 3600 and RTX 2060 Super is quite powerful, but I’m still holding around 70 FPS without DLSS, so the 144Hz variant of the 24G2U might be better from this point of view as well and better tuned for lower frame rates? This is also one of the reasons why I prefer full HD, I know if the frame rate drops below 60Fps, the game is hard to play for me. I would suffer on QHD and higher resolutions (I don’t have such a powerful PC).

I think you’ll enjoy the upgrade, even if you’re only getting 70fps. It does indeed work well at that sort of refresh rate and is well tuned there – and yes, better (less overshoot) there on the 144Hz version (‘Medium’ overdrive setting) than the 165Hz version. You can take a look at the pursuit photos from Test UFO at 60Hz for the reviews (linked to) and see this difference in pixel response behaviour. Below is a small version of the photos for convenience. It shows the 24G2SP(U) and in the first reference column there’s the 24G2(U) running with its ‘Medium’ setting, which is optimal for 60Hz on that one. It’s clearer on the bigger version of the image in the review and the accompanying text explains the differences shown. 🙂

Thank you very much for the advice.
                  I will buy 24G2U/BK.

Hello. I have to ask again, in the review from channel Techless on Youtube mentions that the 24G2U/BK suffers from flickering when using adaptive sync. Is it true? Because I will be using G-sync and it would be a major disadvantage. Flickering is supposedly solved only with 24G2SP :-(.
                      And I ordered 24G2U/BK.
By the way, I found that the 24G2U/BK (probably has USB ports and adjustable stand) is the same price as the 24G2SPAE/BK (probably has no USB and adjustable stand, with an adjustable stand, it’s the +$40 “SPU version” as I wrote). If these are the only differences and the adaptive sync is really flickering, I don’t know if I should change the order to 24G2SPAE/BK 🙁 .
I am confused which one to really choose.

There was a firmware issue that affected some 24G2(U)s and could cause this, but this was rectified and is considered a fault by AOC. Reference. You’re much more likely to receive a model with the new firmware than old firmware, unless your retailer sells a low number of these (unlikely). And if you do happen to receive one with the faulty firmware, AOC should swap it just as they did with the individual in that thread.

The 24G2SPAE is indeed the same as the 24G2SPU, with tilt-only stand and no USB ports by the way.

Thank you. I’m sorry, but I have to ask. If the 24G2U is the same price as the 24G2SPAE, which should I choose in my situation? (USB and stand are not important).

I think we’ve already discussed the pros and cons of both models (24G2SPU = 24G2SPAE for performance), including the advantages of the 24G2U and its tuning at lower refresh rates – have we not? I’d say the better tuning for lower refresh rates would be a good reason to go for the 24G2U. 🙂

Yes it is true 🙂 !
Thanks for the reminder, I have a difficult decision-making nature (sometimes it’s very hard for me :-D).
I have an order for the 24G2U, it should arrive tomorrow.
21Hz higher refresh rate is useless to me. Color rendering and other parameters are equally good for both.
                              1) Is there a guide here on the forum so I can verify that I have the correct type of Panda panel?
                              2) How to verify that I don’t have the flickering problem and have a new firmware?

                              PCM2

                                1) I can’t share service menu access methods publicly. But the date of manufacture should be printed on the monitor label at the rear. If this isn’t around Dec 2020 – May 2021 then you’ve most likely got the Panda panel on your unit.

                                2) You either notice issues like this in an obvious way or you don’t. Refer to the thread I linked to earlier and the VRR flickering test that can highlight this in a very obvious way.

Well, I have a monitor at home :-).
By the label, can I tell before I even open the box that I have the correct first version?

No, as there’s no (interpretable) information there that provides the date of manufacture.

According to the label on the back, it’s safe to say that I have the correct version, the 2019 version, reviewed? Thanks.

Yes, your 24G2U appears to be outside that short period of time where the BOE panel was used (possibly starting late 2020, but definitely into early 2021) – so it will be using the same panel as the one we reviewed and that newly manufactured models use.

So the monitor is connected. No defective or dead pixels, colors great, contrast too. I haven’t noticed any problem yet. I’ll see after a few weeks of use. I hope it doesn’t whistle (sometimes the power supply does).

That’s great to see! Glad you’re enjoying it so far, I hope it continues to impress. 🙂
