I’m definitely an OLED fan: switching to an OLED TV was a really great satisfaction.
So I’ve been following PC monitor releases using this technology for some time, and I have to say that some models now on the market have been a temptation.
But I’m also a fan of 21:9 (I now own an LG 34GN850), and I confess I’m also a fan of LG.
So when the LG 45GR95QE came out, I jumped on my seat (even if when I saw the price, my enthusiasm immediately dropped).
But there are some things I don’t understand about this monitor:
First of all, isn’t 84 PPI a bit low?
Given the curvature it is certainly a desk monitor, so it will be used at 60-70 cm. This is why I don’t understand the choice of a 45” size: wouldn’t it have been better to settle for an intermediate solution?
Instead, I’m happy with the choice of a 3440×1440 resolution: I think it’s the wisest choice in terms of resolution, given that behind a monitor there must always be a video card capable of supporting it with adequate fps. I have no experience with 4k (I see that LG has released OLED models with these features), but making this choice would mean giving up 21:9. It seems strange to me that LG hasn’t yet released a 3440×1440 uwqhd model, having dominated this band for a long time.Overall, I’m eager to read a review of the 45GR95QE.
Here in Italy the price is prohibitive (1850 euros on Amazon: it came from UK with 350 euros of import taxes), but I think it will drop rapidly (the AW3423DWF just released a few months ago was at 1600, now it is at 950)
September 6, 2023 at 10:21 am #73894PCM2The combination of 44.5″ screen size and 3440 x 1440 resolution is indeed a curious one, with the pixel density (~84 PPI as you stated) fairly similar to a 27″ Full HD model. That plus the large physical size makes it something of a niche product really – I’m personally not a fan of that pixel density at all either on the desktop or gaming and I personally put this model and others sharing the panel in the obscure and not enjoyable to review (for me) camp. I certainly don’t see this is a comfortable or practical solution on the desktop. The low resolution makes fringing issues all the more noticeable. There are others who will still really enjoy the sheer immersion provided by the large screen and they may like to watch video content where the pixel density is less of an impediment (though still a factor) or may find the clarity for gaming acceptable. Especially given the benefits of the OLED technology still shines through.
To give a British expression, I consider this a “Marmite product”. Some will love it, others will hate it. I guess it’s one you’d have to see for yourself to make that judgement. 🙂 It’s also worth noting that LG Display are working on a 39″ 3440 x 1440 WOLED panel which will provide extra size and immersion compared to 34″ (which they’re also working on) with an intermediate pixel density that will be similar to a 23″ Full HD monitor.
September 6, 2023 at 12:07 pm #73896SergioSThank you very much! that’s all i needed to hear.
I’ll wait for LG’s next releases… anyway I would never have bought a monitor if you hadn’t reviewed it first 🙂
