I love this site and I wish you had a link for the LG 27MD5KL-B because it seems to be the only monitor that meets my needs, unless anyone here can suggest an alternative? I’m looking for >=200 ppi, >=27″, DCI-P3, 16:9 (I will use 2 of them)

I’m glad you enjoy the content. The X-Rite i1Display Pro (now branded as Calibrite ColorChecker Display Pro) and the i1Display Pro Plus (now branded Calibrite ColorChecker Display Pro Plus) which can record higher peak brightness of up to 2000 nits are good colorimeters which give a reliable calibration. The bundled software isn’t all that ‘interesting’ to me as a reviewer and arguably isn’t the most flexible really as it doesn’t give very neat reporting. But you can use the device with other software as well if that sort of thing is interesting to you. The newer Datacolor devices such as the SpyderX series (SpyderX Elite etc.) and new Spyder X2 models (Spyder X2 Elite and Spyder X2 Ultra) are also good devices and give solid calibration results. The X2 Ultra is able to reliably record higher brightness levels up to 2000 nits. I like the reporting and intuitive nature of the bundled Datacolor software, which is why I like to use their reports and graphics in reviews. It doesn’t seem to impact the calibrations themselves in a clear way, but the devices (at least the SpyderX, haven’t tested X2 yet) aren’t good at accurately measuring very low black depths so aren’t ideal for contrast readings. Which is why we use an X-Rite sensor for that instead.

I’m actually contemplating upgrading the SpyderX Elite to Spyder X2 Elite (don’t personally need the Ultra as the high brightness measurements are handled by our X-Rite sensor anyway). It’s interesting to me as a reviewer and I like that they’ve added Rec. 2020 into the gamuts you can compare to in their software as well. But it comes at quite a premium over the original SpyderX series or Calibrite / X-Rite packages and I can’t really say that as a normal user you should pay that premium. I’m sure it will come down in price in time, it’s very new at the moment. 🙂

P.S. Be aware that if you want to support the website, you can visit Amazon via links to other products and then browse to the screen from there – we still get commission for purchases that aren’t the original monitor your clicked. There aren’t many ‘5K’ models or monitors with the sort of pixel density you’re after on the market, so I think you’ve chosen a good one with that LG with that requirement in mind.

Calibrite now has a new range of colorimeters , including the ‘top of the line’ offering which is the Display Plus HL. This one’s quite future proof in terms of luminance measurements as it goes all the way up to 10,000 nits. The Display Pro HL offers everything that this one does but is limited to 3000 nits (still useful) and doesn’t appear to support the BT.1886 tone curve for Rec. 2020 calibration. The software package (‘Calibrite Profiler’) doesn’t seem to have gained any new useful reporting features that would appeal to me as a reviewer or those who simply appreciate such things. In typical X-Rite style it’s more focused on a streamlined calibration process than useful or ‘attractive’ reporting functionality. I’m sure these devices will work well and continue on from earlier X-Rite and Calibrite branded products as reliable and accurate colorimeters.

I want to buy new Calibrite Display SL meter, will it work with DisplayCal and can I choose different profiles for monitor like QD, miniLED and others?

Just acquired Datacolor Spyder X Elite and was dissapointed that it not have calibrations for QD monitors and also users cant create there own, we only have built-in ones(

As far as I’m aware the Calibrite Display SL should work fine with DisplayCAL and you should be able to load in different spectral profiles to better match the monitor’s light source. But it’s not something I have personal experience with and is something you should probably enquire about on the DisplayCAL hub (forums) as you might be able to get absolute confirmation there.

Not sure what’s happening with displaycal as the original creator seems to have effectively abandoned it.

I tried for experimental purposes this morning, using the Calibrite Profiler program with my old but reliable Colormunki!

I had to pay £8.99 to ‘upgrade’ and allow me to use it with the software.

Initial results when I compare it to Displaycal is that Displaycal probably does profile better, but not drastically. I’m talking delta 1.5/6483k with the profiler and 0.95/6504k with Displaycal.

Displaycal is obviously a lot more technical and has the ability to include color corrections, show more technical data at the end etc. But for what’s it’s worth I wouldn’t say the profiler software was poor. Simpler. But gets the job done

I completely agree that for most people the bundled software (or software created by the colorimeter manufacturers) is all that’s needed. I see DisplayCAL in the same way I see certain mods or modding communities for games. An additional or alternative experience driven and ultimately taken over by a passionate community, but not necessary for most people’s use of the product.
